Crown of Thorns IHS Wax Seal

Handcrafted from an antique French medallion from the early 1800s, this wax seal charm features the a letters IHS in the middle, a cross above the letters, three arrows below with a crown of thorns wrapped around the entire edge.

IHS is the symbol of the Holy Name of Jesus. It is the first three letters in the Greek spelling of Jesus' name (Iota-Eta-Sigma). After three nails were added under the insignia (together with a cross above), some noticed that the inscription now contained a “V” below the IHS – so that we see IHSV. In this form it was adopted by St. Ignatius as the symbol of the Jesuits. IHSV was interpreted to mean In Hoc Signo Vinces, “In this sign, you shall conquer”.

Thorns were a product of the fall of man, a consequence of the entrance of sin into the world and God cursed the ground, declaring that it would forever produce thorns and thistles.(Genesis 3:18) The crown of thorns represented that part of the curse that Jesus took upon himself in his crucifixion.

This fine silver charm is almost 3/4” round and hangs on a 18" stainless steel baby ball chain that closes with a ball chain connector clasp. Other types of chains are sold separately.

Handcrafted in my studio in Spokane, Washington, each symbolic wax seal item from The Silver Acorn is hand-stamped in reclaimed fine silver or bronze and will be slightly different and uniquely yours.
