Hospitality - Pineapple

Handcrafted from a vintage wax seal stamp, this talisman features a pineapple which is the symbol of hospitality.

In colonial America, hostesses would set a fresh pineapple in the center of their dining table when visitors came to their homes. Grocers often rented pineapples to hostesses desperate to create a dining experience beyond their financial means. They would then return it to be sold to affluent clients who could afford to actually buy and eat it. Regardless of one’s financial ability, visitors to the homes that displayed the pineapple felt honored that the hostess had spared no expense to secure one in their behalf.

If the visitors spent the night, they would be given a bedroom with a bed in which pineapples had been carved on either the bedposts or the headboard. Even today, the pineapple is a symbol of the warmest welcome a hostess could extend to her guests.

This fine silver talisman is approximately 7/8" x 3/4” oval and hangs from an 18" stainless steel baby ball chain that closes with a ball chain connector clasp. Other types of chains are sold separately.
